Napoleon sometimes preferred them to the grenadiers for delicate missions. The 1st regiment was known as 'Imperial Guard Chasseurs' while the 2nd was formed from the Consular Guard foot chasseurs.
The foot chasseurs were the counterpart of the grenadiers in the Old Guard. Same selection criteria. They wore the shako and green tunic. The 1st and 2nd foot chasseur regiments formed, with the grenadiers, the backbone of the Old Guard battalions.
