Empire Napoléon is read all over the world. This policy explains what personal data is processed when you visit the website, why, by whom, and how to exercise your rights. It is written to meet the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and, more broadly, the data protection laws of the countries where the website is read.
1. Data controller
The data controller is the publisher of the website (see the legal notice). For any question or request: contact@empirenapoleon.com.
2. In short
- No account, no sign-up, no form: the website does not ask you for any information.
- The website is hosted by Netlify, funded by advertising (Google AdSense) and measures its audience with Google Analytics.
- In the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom and Switzerland, no advertising or audience-measurement cookie is set without your consent.
- Your data is not sold.
3. The consent message
To collect and remember your choices, the website uses Google's consent management platform (“Privacy & messaging”), certified by Google and compliant with the IAB Transparency & Consent Framework (TCF). In the EEA, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, a message is shown on your first visit: you can accept everything, refuse everything, or choose purposes and partners one by one. Google stores your choices in a cookie on your device.
You can change them at any time with the “Privacy and cookie settings” link shown on the website.
4. Data processed
4.1 Visiting the website (hosting)
Like any web server, our host Netlify records technical data for each request: IP address, date and time, page requested, browser and operating system, referring page. This data is used to deliver the website, protect it against abuse and diagnose faults. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in providing a safe, available website. Retention: a limited period set by Netlify.
4.2 Audience measurement (Google Analytics)
Google Analytics 4 tells us which pages are read, for how long, on what type of device and from which country, so that we can improve the website. Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses.
- EEA, United Kingdom, Switzerland: no Analytics cookie without your consent. Until you accept, Google may only receive, without cookies, measurement signals that do not identify you (Google consent mode). Legal basis: your consent.
- Other countries: measurement is on by default. You can block it with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on or your browser settings. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in knowing the website's audience, where the applicable law allows it.
_ga and _ga_* cookies: 13 months at most. Measurement data: kept for 14 months at most.
4.3 Advertising (Google AdSense)
The website is partly funded by ads served by Google AdSense:
- third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites;
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visits to this website and/or other sites on the Internet;
- you may opt out of personalised advertising in Google Ads Settings and, for other vendors, at youronlinechoices.com (Europe) or aboutads.info (United States).
In the EEA, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, ads are personalised only with your consent; without it, Google may show non-personalised or limited ads. Google acts as a controller for its own advertising services: how Google uses information from sites that use its services. Legal basis: your consent or, outside those countries, our legitimate interest in funding the website where the law allows it.
4.4 Maps
The battle maps use Esri base maps (ArcGIS Online). When a map is displayed, your browser downloads these images directly from Esri's servers, which therefore receive your IP address; no cookie is set. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in illustrating the narratives with maps. See Esri's privacy statement.
4.5 Affiliate links and external websites
Some pages suggest books with links to Amazon, which may be affiliate links. Nothing is transmitted unless you click. If you do, you are on Amazon's website, which applies its own privacy policy and may record that you came from Empire Napoléon. The same applies to the other websites we link to.
4.6 Writing to us
If you write to us, your email address and message are used only to reply to you and are kept for as long as needed to handle your request and follow it up. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in answering the messages we receive.
5. Providers and international transfers
| Provider | Role | Country | Safeguard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netlify, Inc. | Hosting | United States | Data Privacy Framework |
| Google (Google Ireland Limited; Google LLC) | Consent, audience measurement, advertising | Ireland, United States | Data Privacy Framework |
| Esri, Inc. | Base maps | United States | Data Privacy Framework |
All three companies are certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and its UK and Swiss extensions. Transfers to the United States therefore rely on the European Commission's adequacy decision of 10 July 2023 and the equivalent UK and Swiss decisions or, failing that, on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.
6. Your rights
Whatever your country of residence, you can ask us for access to and a copy of the data concerning you, its correction, erasure, restriction of processing and portability, and you can object to processing based on our legitimate interest. You can also withdraw your consent at any time, without affecting processing already carried out.
Write to contact@empirenapoleon.com. We reply within one month, which may be extended by two months for complex requests, in which case we will tell you. As the website does not identify you, we generally hold no data that can be linked to you; for data held by Google, you can also use the tools in your Google Account.
You can lodge a complaint with a data protection authority: in France, the CNIL; elsewhere in the European Union, the authority of your country; in the United Kingdom, the ICO; in Switzerland, the FDPIC.
7. United States residents
We do not sell your personal information. Personalised advertising may, however, count as “sharing” or “targeted advertising” under the laws of several states (including California, Colorado and Virginia). Where your state's law requires it, the website shows a “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” link, provided by Google, so that you can opt out. You can also turn off personalised ads in Google Ads Settings, or write to contact@empirenapoleon.com to exercise your rights to know, access, correct and delete, without discrimination.
8. Other countries
If you live in Brazil (LGPD), Canada (PIPEDA), Switzerland (FADP), the United Kingdom (UK GDPR) or any other country with a data protection law, you have rights equivalent to those described above and can exercise them in the same way.
9. Children
The website is open to everyone and does not ask for any personal information. It is not aimed specifically at children and does not knowingly collect data from children under 13. In France, a minor under 15 needs a parent's agreement to accept audience measurement or personalised advertising; if in doubt, simply refuse everything.
10. Security
The website is served over HTTPS only. It has no visitor database and no members' area: the only technical data is that of the host and of the services described above, which apply their own security measures.
11. Changes
This policy may change, for example if a service is added or removed. The date of the last update is shown at the top of the page; in the event of a significant change, your consent will be requested again where necessary.
