Napoleon Bonaparte was born in Ajaccio, the second surviving son of Carlo Buonaparte, a lawyer and assessor of the royal jurisdiction, and of Letizia Ramolino. Corsica had been French for barely a year, following Paoli's defeat at Ponte-Novu. Holding a royal scholarship, the boy left the island at nine for the college of Autun, then the military school of Brienne.
