After a day of fighting at Romainville and Montmartre, Marmont and Mortier signed the surrender of the capital during the night; Joseph and the regent empress had left the city. Alexander I and Frederick William III entered Paris on the morning of 31 March. Napoleon, arriving too late at Fontainebleau, learned that his capital had fallen without him.
