One hundred and fifty thousand men and two thousand transport vessels gathered on the Channel to invade England. Two years of drill forged the instrument that would become the Grande Armée, with its autonomous corps and seasoned staffs. Unable to concentrate his squadrons off Boulogne, Napoleon broke camp in August 1805 and wheeled about towards the Danube.
