Negotiated by Caulaincourt, the treaty left Napoleon the title of emperor, sovereignty over the island of Elba, a guard of four hundred men and an annuity of two million that was never paid. Marie Louise received Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla; the Bonapartes were pensioned and exiled. On the night of 12-13 April the Emperor tried to poison himself before accepting his fate.
