Landed at Portoferraio, the emperor of an island of twelve thousand inhabitants designed a flag, opened roads and reorganised the iron mines and salt works. His mother and his sister Pauline joined him; Marie Louise and his son, held in Vienna, never did. The promised annuity did not arrive and the news from France was bad: ten months were enough to prepare the return.
