Elba Island

First exile (1814-1815)

By the Treaty of Fontainebleau, Napoleon received sovereignty over the island of Elba. He landed there on May 4, 1814 and remained until his escape on February 26, 1815.

Napoleon reorganized the island, creating a miniature Empire with a Guard and a court. He watched events in France. The Congress of Vienna and financial difficulties pushed him to attempt a return.
