Consulate (1799-1804)

A plebiscite approved the Consulate for life by more than three and a half million votes to eight thousand, together with the right to designate a successor. The Constitution of Year X that followed curtailed the Tribunate, strengthened the Senate and completed the personalisation of power. Only the title was lacking: the Empire was already in the making two years before its proclamation.
