The constitution drafted after Brumaire vested most power in a First Consul, Bonaparte, flanked by Cambacérès and Lebrun. Sieyès, who had hoped for a decorative executive, was pushed aside into the Conservative Senate. Suffrage was hollowed out by the notability lists, and the plebiscite of February 1800 approved the text by an overwhelming — and supervised — majority.
