Creation of the Banque de France

Consulate (1799-1804)

To escape the monetary chaos inherited from the assignats, the Consulate created a joint-stock bank charged with discounting commercial paper and issuing notes. Two hundred shareholders, the future 'two hundred families', formed its assembly. Together with the germinal franc and the land register, it became the lasting financial foundation of the French state.
