Louis XVIII entered Paris and settled at the Tuileries, having rejected the senatorial constitution and dated his reign from 1795. The Charter granted on 4 June preserved the Civil Code, equality before taxation and the sale of church lands, but restored the white flag and a chamber of peers. The return of the émigrés and the half-pay of thousands of officers prepared, in ten months, the success of the Flight of the Eagle.
