Tried by the Chamber of Peers for having rallied to the Emperor after promising to bring him back 'in an iron cage', Marshal Ney was shot near the Observatory, refusing the blindfold and giving the order to fire himself. He paid for the wave of proscriptions and vengeance of the summer of 1815, from Marshal Brune murdered at Avignon to General La Bédoyère shot in August. The White Terror durably fixed the rift between imperial France and royalist France.
