Inauguration of the Vendôme column

15 août 1810

Empire — The Grand Empire (1810-1812)

Forty-four metres high and cast from the bronze of guns captured at Austerlitz, the column of the Grande Armée was inaugurated on Saint Napoleon's day. A spiral of bas-reliefs recounts the campaign of 1805; a statue of the Emperor as Caesar crowns it. Pulled down in 1814, restored, then toppled by the Commune in 1871, it would be raised yet again.
