On the mystical initiative of Alexander I, Russia, Austria and Prussia pledged to govern by the precepts of the Christian religion and to assist one another. Completed in November by the Quadruple Alliance with London, it gave Europe a congress system against revolutions. For thirty years this pact would repress the liberal and national movements born of the Napoleonic period.
