After the assembly of Jewish notables of 1806, a Grand Sanhedrin of seventy-one members met in Paris to give religious force to the answers given to the Emperor. It produced the recognition of the primacy of civil law and, in 1808, the organisation of the consistories. Emancipation nonetheless came with the 'infamous decree' restricting for ten years the credit and residence of the Jews of Alsace.
