Empire — Zenith (1804-1809)

The regulation of July 1804 organised the imperial court: grand marshal of the palace, grand equerry, chamberlains, ladies of the palace, with precedence and dress settled in detail. Duroc administered a household of several hundred people, modelled on Versailles but stripped of its slowness. The court became a political instrument, meant to win over the old nobility and impress Europe.
