At Schönbrunn, a seventeen-year-old Saxon student, Friedrich Staps, tried to approach the Emperor with a knife in order to free Germany. Questioned by Napoleon himself, he refused any pardon and was shot four days later. The episode revealed the birth of a German nationalism that the Confederation of the Rhine could no longer contain.
