Deprived of West Indian sugar by the blockade, the Empire funded schools of chemistry, allocated thirty-two thousand hectares to beet and granted licences to forty factories. The price of colonial sugar had risen fivefold: a substitute was needed. This was the birth of a lasting French sugar industry, one of the few fruitful effects of the Continental System.
