Blockaded at Rochefort by the British cruisers, the Emperor gave up flight to America and went aboard Captain Maitland's ship, having asked the Prince Regent for 'the protection of his laws'. London refused the status of guest: he would be a prisoner of state, deported to Saint Helena. On 7 August he left Europe on the Northumberland, never to see it again.
