Memory and legend (1821-1861)

Published by Las Cases, the conversations of the exile presented a liberal Napoleon, herald of nationalities and of European unity, victim of the coalesced kings. The book was one of the greatest publishing successes of the nineteenth century and shaped the golden legend through the Romantic generation. It was largely this text, more than the Bulletins, that made the Second Empire possible.
