Napoleon often stayed at Fontainebleau during the Empire. It was in the Cour du Cheval-Blanc (Cour des Adieux) that he bade farewell to the Guard before leaving for Elba. He attempted to poison himself on the night of April 12-13.
Fontainebleau Palace was the scene of Napoleon's abdication on April 6, 1814. He signed the treaty granting him the island of Elba there.
