Line infantry

Backbone of the army

1803-1815

Line infantry formed the backbone of Napoleonic armies. Organized in regiments of 2,000 to 3,000 men, it maneuvered in columns for assault and in lines for fire. The Charleville model 1777 musket was the standard weapon.

Each division typically comprised two brigades of two regiments. Regiments bore numbers (1st to 156th in 1812). The blue uniform with white lapels and the shako characterized the Napoleonic line soldier.
